  • 2010 in Brief: The Running Enthusiast’s Journey

Though it has been a roller coaster ride for me, there are still so many things to be thankful for the year 2010.

As I started out the year with a bad note, sulked, and focused more on work and other stuff, I finally made a decision that have changed the way 2010 ruled over me.  The decision was made to start running last March and joining my first official race a month after.  To date, I already joined 11 races with a total of 110 kilometers (exclusive of my training runs).  My goal was to finish a half marathon, Pikermi, or 21K (whichever way you want to call it) before the year ends.  But I managed to finish two, that’s for King of the Road and Quezon City International Marathon.  On a side note, prior to running, I’m an avid badminton player and fanatic.  I usually spend my Tuesdays and Thursdays inside the court playing with colleagues and friends.

2010 Race Bibs and two 21-K Medals

Along the journey, I’ve met a lot of new friends from the running community.  I’ve joined Adination of Runners-Alabang last June which I consider my family, have attended several running clinics/seminars, and gatherings.

    Adination of Runners-Alabang Family

This is also the year where I had an accident while riding my bike.  This happened last April where I found myself lying beside West Service Road with a bump on my right temple, wounds around my right eye and left knuckles.  I remember running my first race with Band-Aids on. :)

    Accident Prone???

I’ve also started organizing and writing my blogs/articles.  Thanks to all runner-bloggers whom I followed for tips.  You know who you are guys, raise your hands. :) I started with the Blogger platform and then later transferred to WordPress.  I gained a lot of readers from the initial launch of http:raintherunningenthusiast.blogspot.com.  Got a little busy and tired of writing that time so when I decided to resume writing, I considered transferring to WordPress; fitting to change the look and feel of the original blogsite.  I established http://runningenthusiast.wordpress.com focusing on using the name Running Enthusiast to institute a more solid base for a running blog identity…let’s just say re-branding.  It was tough to regain the number of readers you’ve had from the original site.  But after 2 months or so, the site was able to catch a good number of readers once again.  After some time, I saw this promo on Facebook where they offer a year of free web hosting plus giving you your own domain.  Won the promo and started to have my own domain.  Then the http://runningenthusiast.net/ was born.  I originally wanted a dot com as this is more popular, but unfortunately runningenthusiast.com already has an owner (thank God it’s for lease now, which I don’t think will be used in the near future).  That’s the reason why I opted to use dot net.  The runningenthusiast.net is still coping up with yet another transfer from free hosted wordpress to a self hosted one.  I’m still confident that it will gain number of viewers especially after the holiday season.  It was also because of blogging that I got invited to attend a bloggers’ night for the launch of Condura Skyway Marathon 2011, which I really never imagined to be attending and see bloggers in the flesh!  That’s also the venue where I officially introduced myself as the Running Enthusiast.

    headcount?

This year was also a year when I won a lot of items, first the dot net, second when I won a DVD player, third is winning in Toby’s Sports What I Want for Christmas promo where I wished for a pair of running shoes (Asics GT 2150) which I did claim last December 24, 2010!  As I’ve said in previous entries, never have I experienced winning in raffles and contests until this year. :)   Thanks for being good to me.

    Thank You!

Most of all I would like to thank my friends (and would be sponsors).  I hope to see you next year and create a more solid partnership.

Imagine, all these in one year?!?!?!?!

As the year ends, I leave all the bad memories behind and charge them to experience.  May 2011 bring more encouragement, inspiration, runs, races, winnings, sponsors(?), and give birth to more running enthusiasts!

    from the Running Enthusiast
***  So what awaits the Running Enthusiast next year?  I really don’t know.  What I’m sure of is that I’ll keep on running and inspiring others to make this sport – my passion – your lifestyle.  It is also nice to note that the my first quarter of 2011 already has scheduled running events. ;)   ***

  • The QCIM 2 Experience

    my second Pikermi medal

This is my second Pikermi experience and it was, should I say, full of surprises!

Excitement filled me as the event drew closer.  I even had pre-race anxiety where I was only able to sleep 2.5 hours.

The 21K race started at 5AM.  Here’s some sort of blow-by-blow event that happened to me:

    • 5AM: Gunstart and everything was in place.  Did the pace I wanted.
    • 6:50AM: First bout of right calf cramping.
    • 7:48AM: Started to feel hungry.  This was around 17K.  The “wall.”  Cramps got worse.  Started to walk a whole 3 kilometers.
    • 8:15AM: Saw the ANR Alabang peeps.  Gave them the ‘dead’ sign and they paced me towards the finishline.  Thank you so much for that.

The route was really challenging!  Never imagined I could pass Commonwealth Ave just by running.  Also had a nice trip around UP Diliman.  The last time I’ve been here was in 2008.  Now I know why some of my friends recommend running around the campus.  You should try it yourself.  :)   At gunstart the UP campus gave a chilly weather.  I was like entering a walk in refrigerator.

I love the route but it killed my calves and quads.  I swear it did!  I just wish they’ve been a little nice and considerate.  lol!

Water stations were just enough.  They never ran out of water.  They even had a shower somewhere that runners can cool themselves.

    pretending not having cramps :)

Since I’m a victim of cramps, I had to seek some assistance from the Medics booth.  The first 2 had liniments with them but as I passed by the last booths, to no avail.  They ran out of supply.  It’s not a surprise because they only have a small bottle. :(

One of my concern was the placement of kilometer markers.  Though some Garmin owners said that the route is 23++ kilometers in total, I’m more concerned about the wrong information being sent to runners.  At one point I saw 19K and then later on I saw 18K.  Huh?  Did I make the wrong turn?  No I didn’t.  They got the thing interchanged.  Also, markers were not seen much in Commonwealth Ave. So I was at a lost for proper information about the remaining distance.

QCIM 2 was a hit!.  Since I’m used to running BGC and MOA, I think this is another breath of fresh air for me (since Resorts World also introduced Villamor route last week).  Did I say fresh air?  lol!

    Post Race

    • Discovered that my two left toenails are saying goodbye to me.
    • Got really hungry that I ate pizza and pasta.
    • Fell asleep without me knowing.
    • Drove to the mall, did my groceries, had a massage and what a relief.
    • Discovered that the ball of my foot is painful; like it received a lot pf pressure.  Could that mean I’m now learning to become a forefoot runner?  Was that the reason of my leg cramps?
    • Preparing to place some liniment and get my legs compressed.
    • Realized that this, for the time being, is the most memorable run I’ve participated in.

I love post race muscle pains!

  • Adination of Runners – Phase 2

Adination of Runners is on Phase 2!  I still can remember how my first run with ANR Alabang felt like (June 8, 2010) and how I enjoy the camaraderie of the group.  That is one of the reason why I really look forward for Tuesdays.

Attended two sites this week, Alabang and Mall of Asia (MOA).  It was nice to see friends again and of course new members in Alabang (Tuesday).  I’m also excited to see MOA.  I went to MOA (Wednesday) to meet up with RUNners Up group.  I invited them to join ANR Alabang before but they’re mostly from Manila, so when ANR MOA opened, I made sure these guys will join.  Last Wednesday, only Moi and Jerome were able to attend from the RUNners Up group, and we had 42 attendees overall.  Earlier that day, it was raining badly and that could have contributed to the outcome of participants.  We’re still positive that next week’s going to be better.

Adination is bigger, better, and bolder!  There are so many events in store for everybody.  Oh, by the way, did I mention there were freebies given during the launch? Thanks Adidas. :)

I’ll support both sites. :)   If ever I can’t attend Tuesday, there’s always Wednesday!  Welcome to Adination of Runners!

  • Weekend Review

I can’t believe that weekend is almost over and I barely have 3 hours before Monday and 6-8 hours of sleep before going to work.  I always cherish my weekend because it is when I get to forget about work and focus on rest.

I’m beginning to be active again in writing so part of my weekend was to ponder on different articles that I can do.  I’ve already got several topics in mind and hopefully time will allow me to write about them.  As of today, I finished an article that will come out on Tuesday.

Another thing I also love doing on a weekend is to do my long runs early in the morning.  Unfortunately, I was only able to run once this weekend and a short one (5K).  Blah!  To think I should be preparing for my next 21K run in December.  That’s less than a month from now!  I’m having this bad left knee pain again and my legs would not cooperate as well.  Pain is brewing on my right TA’s (tibialis anterior) and other extensor muscles.  It could be a compensatory mechanism (my right leg exerts too much effort) to prevent weight bearing on my left knee.  I should be running again soon so I can correct my form and establish endurance.

Weekends also allow me to read blogs and get updated with my social networking sites.  So far, reading some runners in NYC for a marathon made me also think to participate in international marathon events starting next year.  Now I’m checking my wallet.  :)   Crossing my fingers that I can manage to join at least two events in other countries.

Last but not the least, I do all chores at home every weekend.  From grocery, to mopping the floor, laundry, name it!  I’m an all around housekeeper!  You might wonder how I manage to rest on my hectic weekend.  Believe it or not, I still had siesta (nap time in the afternoon), read a Rick Riordan book, and enjoyed TV shows.  I guess REST is synonymous with HOME for me.

A lot is in store this week.  Aside from demands at work, I’m also looking forward for Phase 2 of Adination of Runners (aNR).  Excited to see new members, running friends whom I’ve invited to join, and of course see my friends in Alabang (see you Tuesday!).  I’m also going to attend MOA on Wednesday to meet those I’ve invited.  Come to think of it, I’m not registered yet!  lol! :)   If you’re interested to join aNR, you may read HERE to get more information.
    See you on the road!

  • Dream Marathon Journey: First Bull Circle

    the speakers

Last night was the start of my Dream Marathon journey. I was hesitant to go at first because of the schedule, location, because I’m not feeling well, workload in the office. But because I really want this, I’ve decided to go and didn’t care much of how I’m feeling.

Saw familiar faces, my ANR Alabang family, some guys I’ve already seen in races, and of course Jaymie. I really didn’t get to check the number of participants in the first bull session. Got more interested with the AVPs and what the speakers would say about their experiences and get some tips from them.

In a nutshell, here’s what I kept in my mini running suitcase:

    • Run smart
    • The importance of hydration, food intake, and training.
    • Always say ‘thank you.’
    • Enjoy the distance
    • Dedication

‘Til the next bull session! Nice to see you batchmates. Hopefully by next session we get to chat and know more about each other.

  • Indian Run

A very tiring drill for me. This not only improves your speed but your stamina and endurance as well.

    Definition:

An indian run is when a team jogs in a single file line around a playing field field. It begins when the last person in line sprints to the front. When that person gets there, the next person at the end of the line sprints to the front of the line. This continues as the line jogs around the field.
